update about Razmik

January 20, 2006

Thanks for your comments regarding the article on Razmik Sargsyan and the situation of the military in Armenia.  As soon as I find official news or anything else on the military, I wll post it.

As for the update about Razmik, I have heard from fellow coworkers within the civil society here that people have visited him in the hospital and he has indeed ended his hunger strike.  At least he is in the hospital at this point and his health is being monitored.

Do you know whether he has ended his hunger strike out of medical reasons, out of pressure or because he has decided that continuation is pointless or…..?

From what I understand, he decided that continuation was pointless. NGOs have consulted and visited with him and urged him to give up the “hunger strike.”

Also, as you did mention before it is highly skeptical that he was truly on a hunger strike from August- December 2005. Humans cannot survive that long without ANY food or water. Nevertheless, he has “publically” made people aware that he has ended his hunger strike.

On the positive note, the hunger strike has helped him get media attention.

    Gracias for the update.
